Saturn Opposition Program - 6 May, 2013

With Saturn being closest and brightest to Earth, Khagol Vishwa and Pimpri-Chinchwad Science Center organized a public saturn viewing program on 5 May, 2013. Around 1500 people participated in this event in the span of 4 hours.

Some of the pictures from program

Asteroid 2012 DA14 Fly-by.

There are hundreds of thousands of Asteroids in our solar system and they come close to our planet many times during their orbit around Sun. But its very rare to have an asteroid flying by the distance closer than some of our geosychronous telecommunication satellites are. Asteroid 2012 14DA, about 150 ft. wide, flew past earth on 15th of February barely missing our planet by 27000 km. Our team of observers set out to photograph this fly-by as the Asteroid was visible through a good binocular and small telescope. You can watch it travel swiftly across the sky in following video.

This video is a set of 16 images taken at 20 second exposure each. While viewing through a telescope, the Asteroid appears like any other star and can be told apart only by its movement in relation to the other stars. However in these photographs, It appears as a small line due to the 20 second exposure while capturing the images. Images are taken by Mayuresh Prabhune, along with Spandan Waghmare, Kedar Saraf and Devdatta Urankar from the Location near Sinhagad Fort, Pune, India.

Upcoming Events

Lonar Crater Study

Lonar crater is an impact crater Located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra State, India (19058'N, 76031'E). Lonar crater is an important geological structure. This crater formed in basalt rock of the Deccan plateau some 35 to 50 thousand years ago is only of its kind. Though now it is declared as an impact crater, from 1823 when J. E. Alexander pointed out the crater, for almost a century and half the exact type of its origin was a debatable issue. Initially it was thought to be a volcanic crater. In fact the famous geologist G.K. Gilbert in 1896 showed its similarity with the Meteor crater (Barringer crater), Arizona.

About Us

Khagol Vishwa (खगोल विश्व), (Registered under, Society Registration Act, 1960) was established on 17th Nov. 1999. In 1998, the Leonid meteor shower was expected with outburst. Some enthusiastic students from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad area came together to observe that event scientifically. After observing that glorious event, all of them got inspired to do something different in Amateur Astronomy. They decided to form an official group under which they could come together; discuss on various topics in Astronomy, observe various events in the Sky and contribute to present amateur astronomical world. A group of 4 - 6 amateur astronomers in 1999 is now a well-known science exploring organization ‘Khagol Vishwa’.
