About the Organisation
Khagol Vishwa logo

Khagol Vishwa (खगोल विश्व), (Registered under, Society Registration Act, 1960) was established on 17th Nov. 1999. In 1998, the Leonid meteor shower was expected with outburst. Some enthusiastic students from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad area came together to observe that event scientifically. After observing that glorious event, all of them got inspired to do something different in Amateur Astronomy. They decided to form an official group under which they could come together; discuss on various topics in Astronomy, observe various events in the Sky and contribute to present amateur astronomical world. A group of 4 - 6 amateur astronomers in 1999 is now a well-known science exploring organization ‘Khagol Vishwa’.

Khagol Vishwa carries lots of activities like Science Popularisation, Monthly Star Gazing Programs, lectures on Astronomy in schools and colleges, Exhibitions, Astro-photography, Scientific Observations of Astronomical Events like Meteor Showers, Radio Meteor shower observations, Occultation, Transit, Eclipses, Variables Stars etc. Khagol Vishwa is also, carrying a Khagol Prasar Abhiyaan at Schools in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Khagol Vishwa is working for a national Goal ‘Vision 2020’.

There are four main sections of Khagol Vishwa.
  • Observation Section
  • Science Popularization Section
  • Research and Development Section
  • Instrumentation Section
Please use the menu above to know more about these sections and their work.

Observing Section

Planetary:
Planetary Observations are helpful to study changes in the surfaces and study of satellites of Planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Saturn Rings, Lunar Surface and as well as Transits and Oppositions of Planets. These observations are visual and Photographic.

Variable Stars:
Visual observations of variable stars and plotting the light curves. These observations are reporting to the organizations- AAVSO, CPA- VSS. Khagol Vishwa has formed a special Variable Star Section- VSS for detailed study in this field.

Occultation:
All types of eclipses, occultation of stars by planets and asteroids, lunar occultation, Transits, timing these events, Photography and CCD observations for study of particular Astronomical body. These observations are submitted to IOTA for further study

Deep Sky:
This section is working for study of faint objects in the night sky. Observations of NGS and Messier objects, comet hunting, photography of deep sky through telescopes.

Science Popularization Section

After analyzing situation of science education and awareness in surrounding area, Khagol Vishwa started to organize slide shows, Lectures, sky watching Programmes, basic astronomy camps to attract school and college students and common people towards Astronomy and basic sciences. This Section is not limited to Astronomy. Various fields in the science come under it

Some Activities under this section:

Khagol Prasar Abhiyan is to attract highschool students towards Astronomy and to train them as an amateur astronomer with the help of Monthly Sky Gazing Programmes, Special Slide Shows on famous events like planet opposition, Eclipse, Meteor Shower, Science workshops for students and science teachers.

Akash Aplya Daari: Free Sky watching Programmes through telescopes with slide shows in societies and villages for common people.

Newsletter ‘Dhruva’: This monthly newsletter of Khagol Vishwa informs about monthly night sky, main events, announcements and current news in Astronomy.

Pimpri Chinchwad Science Congress: The City level science congress is organized after every alternate year in Pimpri - Chinchwad. Khagol Vishwa organized first science congress with the help of Municipal Corporation of Pimpri Chinchwad and Jnana Prabodhini Vidyalaya, Nigdi in January 2005. Arround 1000 students from various schools participated in this 3 day congress. The second Pimpri Chinchwad Science Congress was in January 2007. The third Science congress was held from 12 - 15 February 2009 at S.N.B.P. High School. Around 300 students participated in this science congress.

Keeping the International Year of Astronomy in mind, Khagol Vishwa has decided to arrange lectures and slideshows on basic astronomy in schools and colleges; and will encourage them to start an "Astroclub" of their own for students. If you want to arrange our lectures and need any help in forming an astroclub, please contact us. We'll be glad to help.

Research and Development Section

The aim of formation of this section is to create atmosphere of research and development in India on Amateur Level. It will be helpful to encourage more and more students to do something, to invent something for our society and Nation even if he/she is not with science background and working in different types of fields.

Some main projects under progress are:
  • Radio Networking on the basis of HAM for tele-education and communication under emergency
  • Mini weather stations in all main villages for knowing local environment, helpful for students and farmers.
  • Creating electricity from bio gas
  • Amateur Mobile Observatory for deep sky study and study of Near Earth Objects
  • Analyzing observations taken by all observers, publishing papers, making research projects

Instrumentation Section

Telescope Making
workshop
Any study and research work is not completed without good quality instruments. Khagol Vishwa is trying to buy all kinds of quality instruments, useful for observations and study. At the same time, all these instruments are being constructed and developed manually under this section. Currently, we have 8", 6", 5" and 4" reflector Telescopes. We also have 80X20 binocular for variable star and messier objects observations. Other instruments include SLR cameras, CCDs, Radio Antennas, Computers etc.

Some developed and under-development instruments are:
  • Reflector Telescopes 6”, 12”
  • Photometer: for variable star observation.
  • Radio Receiver and Antenna: for observing Sun, Jupiter.
  • Automatic Radio Meteor Observation setup
  • Sky tracking system
  • Spectroscope
  • Full sky photography system
  • Software for analysis of all types of Astronomical Observations
