Organiser's thoughts...

In spite of arranging public events for over 10 years, this particular event was quite a new experience for Khagol Vishwa. The response from people was overwhelming and it showed the great curiosity common people have, about Astronomy. Everyone including young children to elders were willing to stand in queue for hours to have glimpse of Saturn or Moon up close through Telescope.

We have to give a due credit to our young members (Darpan Lohade, Aakash Karvande, Kiran Thombare, Nisha Waghere, Geetanjali Bhoir and Snehal Shinde, all of them have given 10th Exam) as well, who were there with the telescope everyday, tracking Saturn and moon for 4-5 hours continuously, answering the questions of young Children and communicating with other people. The event wouldn't have been successful without them. None of them had ever volunteered for such a huge program before and it was a learning experience for them as well. When asked about their experiences, all of them echoed the feeling that people, especially young children are very curious about Astronomy in general. All of them feel that on the backdrop of IYA, organisations should come out and arrange more and more programs like these to popularize Astronomy among common people.

The World is celebrating year 2009 as an International Year of Astronomy. As a part of global effort to popularize astronomy among common people, Khagol Vishwa celebrated Astronomy Week from 1st April - 7th April. Every evening, Khagol Vishwa had set up telescopes at different locations in Pimpri-Chinchwad Area to enable people, a chance to view heavenly bodies, Moon and the planet Saturn.

Starting from the Moraya Gosavi Mandir at Chinchwad; Bhel Chauk, Shivaji Uday Mandal Ground (Chinchwad), Ajmera Colony (Pimpri), Lande Chauk (Bhosari), Sai Mandir (Kalewadi), Sai Chauk (Sangvi) were the other locations of the event. The event was huge success. Around 6000 people attended it throughout the week and we were able to reach to the people at grass root level who, otherwise, would have never had a chance to see celestial objects through Telescope.
